Introduction
What is an antibiotic? Why do we need antibiotics? What are antibiotics used for? My topic is about antibiotics. The word antibiotic comes from the Greek word “antibios” which mean “against life”. Antibiotics are drugs used to treat infections caused by bacteria. Our immune system can usually fight of the infection there are occasions when it is too much and we need some help from antibiotics. The first antibiotic to ever exist was penicillin. Antibiotics such as ampicillin, amoxicillin and benzylpenicilllin have been around for a long time.
Antibiotics can help your body fight the bacteria and almost always it succeeds. While the body needs some time to cure it if you don’t use antibiotics, but if you do then it will be much faster. Each antibiotic is for a specific bacteria. Antibiotics are also simple to use. They can be used by people of all ages. It has very low side effects. Antibiotics are safe while pregnancy period too.
Antibiotics can be found in all parts of the world. They are usually sold in pharmacies. Things antibiotics can’t cure are viruses. If you overuse antibiotics then the bacteria can become immune to the cure. Some antibiotics can cause a allergic response. Most anti- microbial drugs cause toxic side effects. Antibiotics kill bacteria that are bad for us but they may also kill the beneficial bacteria. Antibiotics may cause a loss of intestine flora which is not really good for us. Indiscriminate use of antibiotics may cause antibiotics to transfer to human food and transfer of resistant bacteria to humans.
As I said, overuse of antibiotics may cause the bacteria to become immune to the cure and then you have to let the body fight the problem for a while. Antibiotics allowed those who in the days before antibiotics existed would die; well now antibiotics can help with some major problems. Antibiotics help people a lot with their health but at the same time it takes away a bit of what it gives. Scientists have tried to find a way to make antibiotics only beneficial but it will take a lot of time and evolution to make that happen.
The idea of using antibiotics came in the late nineteenth century. In 1943 American microbiologist Selman A. Waksman discovered a fungus that produced a powerful antibiotic substance. The first ever made antibiotic was used to treat lethal diseases such as tuberculosis, typhoid fever, bubonic plague, and bacterial meningitis. The first safe antibiotics were made in 1945. Later scientists were able to grow the quantity of penicillin. When a Peoria woman came to the laboratory with a rotten cantaloupe it proved to be the strongest penicillin to date. Soon many chemical companies were making penicillin that would save millions of lives.
Antibiotics can be very helpful for us humans but if you use it too much, it will turn into your worst enemy. You always have to be careful about the dose of antibiotics. You shouldn’t take an antibiotic if you sneeze once. In conclusion, antibiotics are beneficial for us for some time but not always.
This is a pill of the antibiotic called penicillin.
